This week, or should I say, this year I’ve decided to reduce my stash. We all know how it is. You resolve to only buy what you need. But the moment you step into your local yarn store, that luxurious ball calls longingly to be fondled and before you know it, it’s jumped into your shopping basket and you are home with another addition to the stash! I’m sure I’m not the only one. However, with space and storage at a premium, I now run the risk of sleeping on a bed of yarn soon.
When I left for Hong Kong, I was gripped with such an innate fear that I won’t be able to find yarn, that I panic-purchased enough sock yarn to knit for a family of 10! However on arrival, and having become aquanted with all the local yarn stores, I realized that I ‘may’ have overeacted slightly! Um! My local may not have my sock yarn but I can order online easily enough.
And so, said sock yarn stash has been taking up valuable storage space hence my resolve to reduce this stash. I have also decided not to buy any more yarn until this stash has been significantly reduced.
I’ve been trawling Ravelry for ideas for sock yarn – whether socks, gloves or small shawls. The first set of balls that I pulled from storage is a crazy mix of turquoise variegated with splashes of white, orange and green. Not my favourite. Don’t ask me why I even bought it in the first place. No doubt, in my panic-buying state, everything was fair game.
I started off knitting just a basic sock pattern but really didn’t like the striping and pooling. Mmm what to do? So off to Ravelry to look for some other options. I came up with Aquaphobia by Crystal Flanagan over at Domesticated Human and have to say that I am very happy with the pattern. It somehow turns a ‘not so nice’ striping yarn into a beautiful, interesting pattern that has changed my opinion of this yarn.
One sock down, one to go. Keep checking in to see the finished items.
Have you bought any yarn (it just jumped into your basket), arrived home and then thought “now what?”.
Tell me about your rags to riches projects!
